Albion says the All Road Pertex Shield has been engineered with an on-bike fit and is relatively form-hugging, as is standard for road cycling jackets. The All Road features Albion’s new Triple Zip, for easier on/off and better ventilation options, and is designed to be fully packable.

The jacket uses Pertex’s three-layer Shield fabric, which it says is PFC-free, waterproof and windproof. The All Road is available in orange for both men and women, with a tarn blue also available for the men’s collection. Sizing runs at XS to XL and XS to XXL for women and men respectively.

Fabric and features

The All Road jacket is made from Pertex Shield fabric, which it says has a waterproof rating of 20,000mm, the highest category designed for the wettest weather conditions. The material is also claimed to have a 20,000g/m2/day water vapour transmission, which translates to the highest breathability rating designed for heavy exertion and perspiration.

The jacket features fully taped seams as well as Albion’s new Triple Zip. This closure mechanism uses two parallel zips, one that runs the full length of the jacket and another that runs from the bottom to halfway up, designed for added ventilation. The third zip allows access to the breast pocket and upper ventilation. The sleeves are fastened with Velcro, which can be undone to open up the cuffs for easier on/off while riding.

The All Road rain jacket is designed for on-bike use, primarily road riding. As such, the jacket has a relatively close cut in comparison to its other shells, though is more roomy than traditional race-fit outers.

As a UK 12, I opted for a women’s size large, which provides ample space for layers underneath. If I’d been after a more snug fit, I could definitely have sized down to a medium and still been comfortable.

I was first struck by the practicality of the design. Where most road rain jackets favour sleekness and minimalism over everything else, the Velcro sleeve cuffs are a simple yet effective touch, allowing for the jacket to easily be pulled on or off – ideal for wet and windy conditions and numb hands.

So too with the zippers. The upper and lower halfway zips provide good ventilation while the full body zip was easy to use with its oversized pull tab.

I tested the jacket in Wales in the winter, meaning plenty of torrential rain, and it held up to all of Albion’s claims when it comes to waterproofing. While the Pertex Shield admirably kept the rain out, I did find that I overheated slightly on milder rides – though I do run very warm – so would occasionally return home with a slightly damp jacket on the inside due to perspiration.

The All Road is very lightweight and rolls nicely into a pocket-sized bundle, which fits inside a jersey pocket or pairs wonderfully with the lower-back pocket on Albion’s bibs.

The Albion All Road Pertex Shield rain jacket is a dutiful waterproof shell and a great companion for poor weather rides. The fabric keeps out almost all external water – nothing is 100% waterproof except perhaps a bin bag – while the neat Triple Zip and Velcro cuff features make for a clever yet simple design.

If you run warm, it’s worth keeping in mind that it isn’t the most breathable jacket but then again most waterproof jackets aren’t. It’s not the cheapest rain shell on the market but the quality and Albion’s dedication to repairability make it worth every penny.
